A Glimpse of Heaven

When I was offered my first appointment as a pastor, it was to the Star and Center City United Methodist Churches in Mills County, Texas, just east of Goldthwaite. An elderly man who was a member of one of the churches passed away. I had never met him. He lived his last years in a nursing home and I did not know about him until his passing. For the first time, I would need a funeral sermon and it would need to be suitable for someone I did not know. I knew I did not want to interview family and friends so I could have some stories to tell and somehow pretend to know more than I did. I made a decision then and there that the best funeral sermon was never going to be about the deceased; it would have to be about Jesus. And so I wrote this in 2006 and have used it for every funeral or memorial service I have preached thus far. Many have been older persons. Some have been younger. Some of the deaths were tragic; some were expected. Click the button below to see the full text.
